How to Handle Job Applications When Your Previous Salary Was Paid in Cash?

NAVEEN KODAKANDLA
Hi, this is Naveen. I've completed CA Inter. Presently, I am working in a small construction company. I joined that company directly without any interview. They pay my salary in cash only. Now, I want to move to an MNC company.

Obtaining Salary Slips and Bank Statements

If I get a job, how can I obtain my salary slips or bank statements from my previous company? They only paid cash directly with no TDS deduction, no Form 16, and no salary slips at all.

You can ask for a salary certificate from your current employer and also inform your prospective employer that you used to receive your salary in cash. If you have been depositing this cash into any of your bank accounts, you can also provide your bank passbook as proof of your salary.

Otherwise, as of now, a salary certificate is the only solution that I can think of.

I feel your employer is paying salary in cash to evade compliance related to labor and tax legislations. You have not mentioned whether you sign any register for attendance purposes and for receipt of salary. In the absence of the employer's intention for payment of salary in cash, it may not be possible to ask for a salary certificate. Hence, I suggest you diplomatically ask for a salary certificate under the pretense of submitting it for a personal loan or government benefits. The same can then be used for your requirements.

Thank you for your suggestion. As you advised me to show the bank statements as proof, however, I do not regularly deposit my salary in my bank account. Therefore, bank statements are not preferable. I will request a salary certificate from my employer.

Could you please send me a format of a salary certificate?

Thank you.
