Fatal Accident at PGCIL Aurangabad Stringing Work Site
One fatal accident occurred at PGCIL (Power Grid Corporation of India Limited) with the contractor Jyoti Power at the Aurangabad stringing work site, resulting in the deaths of four workers and serious injuries to 2-3 others. This accident happened during the final sag operation, where the dead-end tower (nearby gantry) collapsed, crushing the workers who were on the tower.
Probable Causes of the Accident
1. Backstay was not provided to the dead-end tower.
2. Over-sagging led to the collapse of the tower.
3. The final sag operation was conducted using two tractors.
4. The winch machine was not in operation.
5. The tower was not fully tightened.
Preventive Measures to Stop This Unsafe Condition
1. Backstay should be fixed at least 1.5 times the height of the tower before starting stringing work.
2. The depth of the dead man pit should be 6 feet, with a minimum diameter of 12 - 14 inches for the dead man wood.
3. A double backstay arrangement may be used to strengthen the backstay.
4. A minimum 18 - 20 mm diameter steel wire rope should be used for the backstay lead.
5. Final checking of the tower must be done before starting stringing activity.
6. Use of the winch machine is necessary.
