Can Retired Employees Continue ESI Contributions for Medical Benefits? Seeking Guidance

AswathyAV
Dear Seniors, I am working in a private limited company as an HR executive. I don't have enough experience in this field. This month, one employee is retiring from the company. I wish to provide him with all the benefits included in ESI, but unfortunately, I don't know anything about the pension scheme and its benefits.

ESI Contribution After Retirement

Now, I want to know if he can pay ESI contributions after his retirement to get the medical benefit. Is there any provision for making individual ESI contributions? If yes, then please tell me about the procedure and the amount needed to be paid each month. I am pleading for your valuable instructions.

Under the ESIC Act, he is eligible to undergo hospitalization for up to 6 months after leaving the company or after ceasing contributions to ESIC due to separation from work. However, there are no provisions to continue ESIC contributions and the continuation of ESIC benefits.

Kindly see Rule 61 of the ESI (Central) Rules, 1950, which provides for making retired insured persons eligible for medical benefits only upon fulfillment of certain conditions. Therefore, you can suggest such retired insured persons contact the Branch Office of ESIC where they are presently attached to comply with such requirements.

The retired person is eligible to receive sickness treatment, but he has to contribute Rs. 120 per year to the corporation.
