Navigating Career Moves: How to Handle Termination and Resignation for MBA Aspirants

adi.kr
I was working at Coal India Ltd. and went home after availing of casual leave to start preparing for my MBA exam. I did not return to the company, and after a few months, I sent a medical certificate for a 6-month leave. I actually wanted to leave the company to pursue my MBA, but I did not submit my resignation. My plan was to submit my resignation just before admission to an MBA college. Recently, I received a termination letter from my company.

What Should I Do Now?

Can I submit my resignation at this point? How will this termination letter impact my career when I apply to other companies after completing my MBA? Would a company request a resignation letter during an interview? How can I prove my 2 years of work experience without a resignation letter?

You should have approached the right way rather than evading your responsibilities towards the company. You can't expect a 6-month leave after not fulfilling your duties. I am not sure how well you have communicated with your company. Go back and talk to HR to present your case for consideration.

By not giving a formal letter of resignation, you have invited the letter of termination upon yourself. I am sorry to sound harsh, but it is not considered professional to not keep your organization informed of your whereabouts while you are employed by them. Why did you not inform them? What strong reasoning was keeping you silent? Sending a medical certificate for six months is not a complete activity if the organization did not respond to that certificate and if you did not follow up for a response.

Your next employer will surely ask for a relieving letter—Coal India is not a small organization. Please do not provide any kind of fake documentation at your next job, as many organizations conduct background checks and you may face termination if they discover any falsified documents.
