Understanding Attrition and Performance Appraisal in Software Companies: Can You Help?

Will anybody be able to tell me what attrition is, and the attrition formula? I do not know it. I am working in a software concern and I am handling 100 people here. I require to handle the performance appraisal and induction, which I do not know. Readers, if you come to know about these, kindly let me know what type of performance appraisal will take place in a software organization and also the type of induction program.
