Repurposing Uniforms in a Dealership

I am working as an HR Manager in a dealership where a uniform is compulsory. However, when an employee resigns, they submit their uniforms to the Admin department, and it remains with them. We cannot give these uniforms to new employees. Can you give me suggestions on how I can repurpose these uniforms? I am considering donating them to some NGOs as part of a CSR activity. The uniforms consist of trousers, shirts, and blazers.

Please provide your suggestions.

In this case, you need to create a specific policy. I have attached the policy format for your reference.

I see no reason why the trousers and blazer cannot be dry cleaned and reused, or at least placed in stock for future use. However, if the company policy is to dispose of these items, then they should be put to good use.

In my company, our employees are required to wear business suits which the company supplies (not quite a uniform). When they are no longer required, we dry clean them and give them away to charities/NGOs who work with unemployed people to use when attending interviews and starting new jobs. This helps in making a good first impression.

I hope the above helps.

If these uniforms are indeed good:

Donation to Charitable Institutions

- Shirts: Many charitable institutions maintaining senior citizens will be willing to take these as they will find them quite useful.

Distribution to Security Agencies

- Shirts, Trousers, and Blazers: Security agencies with similar color shades will be willing to take them. Blazers will be for their field officers who meet clients for business prospects. Perhaps they will even be willing to pay a price for them.

Utilization by Apartment Maintenance Teams

- Shirts, Trousers: We find numerous apartments deploying a workforce for maintaining the apartments, and they will be willing to pay a price for these.

Provision to Housekeeping Agencies

- Shirts, Trousers & Blazers: Several housekeeping agencies provide manpower for carrying out housekeeping activities, and these agencies will also be willing to pay a price for them.

Hi Jayashree,

Why not consider options such as providing the uniforms to employees as part of their yearly benefits? Perhaps we can explore offering a subsidy on the uniform purchases for employees so that the cost does not fall entirely on the company.

Thanks,

Do not ask for uniforms back. Just ensure that the company logo, sticker, or name gets removed from the uniform.

In my opinion, if your uniform has any company logo, you do not need to donate it to any NGO. Firstly, remove all logos from the uniform, and you can reuse all old uniforms as old clothes in your company. This is the standard practice currently being followed.

In my opinion, we should not collect back the company-provided uniform from resigned employees. Instead, we can create a policy where the period/frequency for which the uniform is supplied is defined. For example, if the uniform is given on a yearly basis, we need to establish the cost for that uniform. If an employee resigns from the company, they should pay the cost on a prorated basis rather than returning the used uniform.
