High Attrition and Absenteeism in Apprentices: How Can We Boost Productivity?

karthik28
In one of the leading manufacturing companies, productivity is being affected by a high attrition rate and absenteeism among the apprentice workers. The company is not in a position to hire them as permanent workers, yet they still need to meet the daily requirements of the customers. Please suggest some ideas so that I can conduct my research project effectively and provide valuable information to the organization.

Since you have already identified the root cause of the high attrition rate, the first step is to understand why attrition is so high. This insight will help you determine what is causing dissatisfaction among employees and leading to low productivity. If employees are not happy or motivated in their current roles, they will not be able to perform as required by the company.

Therefore, it is crucial to investigate the reasons behind the high attrition rate. Additionally, engage with current employees to gauge their satisfaction with their work and employer. Understanding their concerns and needs will help you establish a better relationship with them and address any issues they may have.

By addressing the behavioral aspect and improving employee engagement, you can potentially increase utilization and productivity. Furthermore, it is essential for the company to implement a tool to measure employee utilization on an hourly, daily, and monthly basis against set targets. Analyzing this data will help identify areas where utilization is being affected.

Moreover, creating a process map outlining the end-to-end process and estimated delivery times can provide clarity on production timelines.

By taking these steps, you should be able to address the productivity issues caused by high attrition and absenteeism. Once you have gathered your findings, feel free to share them for further review.

Thank you,

First, you need to mention the nature of the industry, whether it is engineering or FMCG. Please arrange a small get-together within your office premises on the weekend and be friendly with all the existing apprentice workers. Discuss their problems and difficulties, then consult with your management to overcome those issues by providing additional facilities and benefits to them.

Addressing Attrition in Manufacturing Companies

Generally, the attrition rate rises in manufacturing companies due to work pressure, continuous shifts without proper rest, and the dumping of responsibilities. Try to explain to them that whatever they learn in your company will be helpful for their career development.

Karan, the employer, is in a position to supply a certain number of car products to an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) with the help of "x" employees (apprentices). A tool needs to be prepared to track daily utilization. The major issue is that the employees do not show up for work at all. How can they be motivated to come to work regularly?

You can hire EPP in place of APP for a 6-month basis. OT is not applicable to APP, but in the case of EPP, OT is applicable.

Alternative Strategies

Involve APPs in some welfare activities or motivational activities, or introduce a new incentive program for them. This will definitely increase your productivity.

Note: You can hire EPPs only for 6 months.
