Are Our 9-to-6, Six-Day Workweeks Fair? Seeking Advice on Working Hours Policy

SHILPA S CHAVAN
Please suggest to me about the working hours. My boss says that employees need to work from 9 am to 6 pm, which amounts to approximately 9 hours a day (including a 1-hour break). We are currently working 6 days a week. Is this correct, or should we consider framing a new working hours policy?

Clarification on Working Hours

Beforehand, please let the forum know whether the company falls under the S&E Act or the Factories Act. Secondly, what is the query if your boss mentions the working hours are 8 hours, excluding the lunch break, and in a week of 6 days, it is 48 hours? So, what do you require the forum to guide you on, whether your boss is correct or not?

Yes, your boss is correct; the timing can be from 9 to 6 (9 hours), including a break of 1 hour.

Thank you, sir, for your time and suggestion. My company falls under the Factories Act.

Query on Employee Working Hours

My query is: Is it valid to have my employees working for 9 hours (including a 1-hour lunch break) at my company? My company operates in the electrical and software-based industry.

Yes, dear, it is very much valid. The term itself says "working hours" and not "rest hours," so you have to count the working hours of the week/day. I hope this clarifies your doubts.

Well, actually, I was a bit confused about the Factories Act regarding the 8 working hours, whether it includes the lunch hour or not. Anyways, thank you so much, sir, for clearing my doubt.
