Considering a Temporary Shift from HR to Administration: Is It a Wise Move for My Career?

robinabr123
Dear Seniors, I am working as an Executive HR, with only one year of experience in HR generalist roles. Due to some financial problems, I am considering shifting my focus from HR to Administration. Would this be a good decision? Another question I have is whether I would be able to transition back to an HR role in the future. I view this administration job as a temporary solution. Would an employer consider hiring me for an HR role after a year or two?

Thank you.

Shifting to administration alone is not advisable, but if you have a real problem, then yes, it can be justified at the time of the interview. However, you must ensure that your knowledge of HR is updated and not left to become a grey area. In that case, the scope of re-entering is less.

It is better to stay in the same function to avoid future confusion. Therefore, try to remain in the same field or, as I mentioned earlier, with a valid reason, it can be considered.

I do agree with the above reply. However, I also suggest, if possible, to handle both Admin and HR simultaneously in your new role. At least show them your willingness to do that. So if not now, at least they might consider offering you an HR role in the future or keeping you in an HR role as well. This will help you so that you are not totally out of the HR field.

All the best!
