Worried About Negative Feedback from Previous HR During Background Checks? Need Advice!

srp.pvv
Hi, due to my personal issues, I left XXX 6 months ago, and I have received an experience letter from XXX as well. When I planned to work again, I attended an interview at XXX and cleared the first round. They scheduled a second round, but I received another offer from an MNC. I then emailed IBM HR, stating that I am unable to attend the interview as I have accepted another offer. Even though XXX HR called me 4 to 5 times, I didn't pick up the calls.

Will XXX HR give negative feedback about me during the background verification process? My new company has a very stringent background verification process.

Please advise.

Company Blacklisting Concerns

The answer is - No. Just because you did not participate further in the interview process, the company can blacklist you from its future openings. However, it cannot give a negative background verification report for your earlier stint with them - which is now a closed chapter. Big and good companies do not indulge in such vengeful acts as your stated apprehensions.

So, relax and look forward to your next assignment.

Warm regards.

There are two dimensions involved:

1. IBM's own internal policy
2. Behavior/attitude of the person giving feedback about you.

If IBM's internal policy does not permit negative feedback on such behavior, they may not provide negative feedback about it. However, many organizations blacklist such hostile candidates for future requirements.

Regarding the second attribute, the chances are slim that the same person will give you feedback. Furthermore, even if you receive a negative rating, the hiring organization will definitely seek clarification, and I do not believe it will hinder your chances of being hired.

One piece of advice: Please exhibit professionalism and carefully select the company you wish to join. It is possible that the same HR person or reporting manager may move to another organization, and if they remember you negatively, it may affect your candidacy. We should build bridges, not burn them.
