"Principal" as a word encompasses the entire range of functions, processes, and activities related to school administration, education, employee management, and the development of the school. It also covers the overall areas of students' personalities, enabling the school to produce a quality product.

As you have not mentioned your prior experience, the total number of employees in the school, the number of students, the atmosphere of the school, the type of support and backup given by top management, and the expectations of top management from you in terms of increasing the number of students, timeframe, and power to work on quality education.

If you have been in the same post earlier, then it is good for you. But if this is a new role for you, try to contact and connect with others in similar positions known to you by any means. Start setting your target for the proper development of the school by analyzing the present system and atmosphere.

Try to connect with experienced staff members, collect important information, get feedback from faculties, teachers, and related staff, and review parents' feedback given for the school, etc.

These actions will slowly but strongly link you to the system. As a principal, you have a big responsibility for quality education, team-building, coordination with staff, the faith of parents, and so on.

Soon you will manage things effectively.

Best Wishes,

Interview Questions and Job Role Clarity

When you were interviewed for this job, what questions were you asked about your skills and ability to do this job and run a school? Why are you asking us how to run a school when you presumably told the interview panel you could do this work? I am really struggling to understand how you obtained this job if you do not know what it is you are supposed to be doing.

If I am understanding this correctly, you have been appointed as Principal of a school, and you have almost no clue as to what you are supposed to do. I am also surmising that you have never run a school before or even been an assistant principal in a school. Is that a fair summary of the situation?

There are a few jobs I can think of that I would love to do, but do not have the qualifications, skills, or experience to do. Being a member of CiteHR has given me a wonderful insight into recruitment practices in India. I really think I should move over there as soon as possible, and then I can get my dream job easily.

I don't mean to sound harsh, but this just completely baffles me.

Challenges in Leadership Roles

The unfortunate problem in India is that not all those who are capable of running a school opt to become a Principal, and not all those who are sitting as Principal are capable of running a school. In fact, I believe this to be true not only for principals but also for Presidents, Prime Ministers, CEOs, VPs, etc. The successful Principal or those who hold such positions are willing to learn; that quality is the most important. So, it is good that this person asked and is getting help, instead of thinking that he knows and messing up the whole thing.

Running a School: A Business Perspective

If you have started your own school without any prior experience, thinking of it as a profitable business, then you must reconsider. In that case, you should hire professionals to run the school.

Understanding CBSE School Norms

CBSE schools have their own norms and affiliation bylaws. You have to go through them very carefully and meet their required requirements to run your show successfully. I have been working with a CBSE school for the last 10 years as an HR-Admin Head. If you need any help, please contact me.
