English Vinglish, directed by Gauri Shinde, is the story of a middle aged Maharashtrian housewife, Shashi, who sells ‘laddoos’ as a hobby. She gets no respect from her husband or her daughter who treat Shashi as a mere housewife whose job is only to look after the family. Her daughter is ashamed of her for not knowing English. Shashi is invited by her sister who lives in New York to help her with her daughter’s wedding.
While Shashi is in New York, she enrolls herself into an English speaking class and then she slowly comes out of her shell, showing her unknown, hidden personality. The story revolves around how a housewife is treated in India and how Shashi breaks the norms made by herself..
