Feeling Stuck in My HR Role: How Can I Find Career Growth and Fulfillment?

anjalirnair
Hi, I am Anjali. I have joined an IT company as an HR manager. It is a small company with 5 employees. This company provides services like web development and designing. My senior officers are the CEO and BDO.

Current Task and Challenges

They gave me a directory that contains company websites and asked me to find outdated websites and provide that list to the BDO. I have been doing this for the past 4-5 days. I am fed up with doing this continuously. They are not assigning me any HR activities, and as I am a fresher, I don't know what to do as an HR. Now, I am afraid of my career growth and exposure. I don't even feel like going to the office when I wake up in the morning because here I am just killing time. I am really dissatisfied!

Seeking Advice

What should I do? Please provide me with your suggestions and opinions.

Regards,
Anjali

First of all, I would request if you can look for and search for a positive aspect in your job, if you can. Clear and open communication always helps an individual or a team to resolve any type of conflict. You can directly have a discussion regarding this with your seniors—this can be one way. Another way could be—you can prepare your list of to-dos, aspects from the future viewpoint for that company by observing and analyzing the scope of HR activities and needs. Prepare a presentation, make a cost-benefit analysis, and then talk to them, explaining and convincing them about what you can do, for what you are appointed, and how it's going to make a difference or how it is important or a must for the organization. I am sure if you start thinking along these lines, it will help you and solve your problem.

I agree with what Mansi has said. First, you may try to explore the possible scopes in the same company. If you find that there are possibilities for you to enhance your learning, then you may continue with the same company.

But going through your case, I guess that you won't find such possibilities there, as there are only 5 employees working in that company. You may not get good HR exposure there. In that case, I highly suggest you look for another job while continuing with the same company. As you are a fresher at this point in time, you need a mentor who can guide you on the practical implications of HR. Try to find a good company where your reporting will be to someone from the HR domain. There you will get the exposure, and then you may be able to shape your career in a better way.

All the best!

Thank you for your valuable comments. As a fresher, I have only theoretical knowledge regarding HRM. Here, I don't have any HR Supervisor to provide help and guidance. So, I don't have any idea what to do here as an HR.
