Transitioning from Marketing to HR: Will My MBA in Marketing Hold Me Back?

Transitioning from Marketing to HR: Seeking Insights

I have completed an MBA in Marketing during the year in which the recession hit the nation. The college placement scenario was not favorable. Companies used to visit, but none of the job conditions were in our favor. However, I managed to secure a job in a small company in an administrative role (manpower = 30). I chose not to pursue a career in marketing as most available positions were in core sales, which did not align with my preferences. As time went by, I was presented with an opportunity to work in the HR Department within the same company. Specifically, the department was managed by one person, and I was tasked to assist him. During this time, I acquired knowledge of basics such as PF, ESI, and salary preparation.

Currently, I am looking to transition to another company within the HR domain. I am concerned whether my specialization in Marketing will pose a hurdle in securing a job in core HR. Could you please provide some insights on this matter?

Thank you.

Transitioning from Marketing to HR

You have completed an MBA in Marketing but do not like to join core sales. You want to pursue a career in HR. I would like to ask you about your experience in HR. Understanding the basics and being able to practice without assistance can be challenging due to a significant gap. If you are confident that you can manage on your own, you can start in small companies to gain practical knowledge and later apply for roles in bigger companies. I hope this answers your question.

If you want to pursue a career in HR but have a degree in marketing, consider enrolling in short courses in HR or a PGD in HR. With experience, this will also add academic certification to your resume.

Thank you for the kind advice. However, I would like to add that my role in HR wasn't confined to only statutory compliances. I was also responsible for employee engagement, ER, etc., and I have been in this field for the last 3 years.

Certified Courses for Transitioning to Core HR

What I would like to know is if there are any certified courses that could help me transition into the core HR profile. Additionally, before pursuing my MBA, I worked as a recruitment consultant, handling HR (recruitment) tasks such as screening resumes from job portals for the company's clients.

Assessing Technical Knowledge in HR

Is there a test available to assess the extent of my technical knowledge in the HR domain? Your guidance on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

There are many courses available that you can apply for, such as PGDHRM, as suggested by YourCareerLion. My concern is, when you were working in recruitment consultancy before pursuing your MBA course, what prompted you to pursue an MBA in Marketing? Later on, if time and resources permit, you can still pursue it.
