Motivating Employees in a Growing Firm

My firm is a small, growing company. The real scenario is that employees don't work with passion; instead, they work without any interest, and for namesake, they are working. It obviously becomes my duty to motivate them.

I am making a wild guess. How is the firm focusing on the learning and development of each employee? I mean beyond the current scope of their work. Routine can erode inspiration, even when all the supporting factors in the environment are favorable.

Let's assume, since your firm is small, there is a greater knowingness and stronger connectivity between the employees, if not a feeling of family or any other kind of belongingness.

Have you tried inviting a good speaker to your firm on areas where your employees might want to listen? Arranging extracurricular activities will remain half-baked as it will only help the employees to find some time to open up and not grow.

Try to understand if you can arrange regular talks by inspirational leaders at your firm, say the last Saturday every month. Are you a member of TiE Chennai? They organize a lot of events, some of them are for free. Try to enroll your employees for such events that can enhance their learning capabilities.

Inspiration is drawn from more than one source. Rethinking work and its design is the next part. Involve your employees in identifying routine tasks that drain them of their energies. Schedule those tasks in ways that can motivate them. Job rotation will help everyone skill for the role.

Let's start an exercise with your employees and ask them for candid answers on why work is boring. This is a brainstorming session; hence every answer is valuable. Let's categorize the areas and find out solutions from them. Let's collect the answer from each and every employee individually so that they can speak without any fear or influence. The leaders in both reporting and non-reporting would be involved in the next step when we have found out all the reasons.
