Choosing the Right MBA Path: HR, Finance, or Marketing for an IT Professional?

shirisha.243
Let me introduce myself. I am Shirisha, working as a System/DBA administrator at IBM India Pvt Ltd. I completed my B.Tech in Electrical and Electronics in 2010. I am now planning to pursue an MBA through distance learning. In total, I have gained 3 years of IT experience.

Could you please suggest which field would be better for my career growth - HR, Finance, or Marketing? I also have the option of a dual course. Your advice would be greatly appreciated. I am eagerly waiting for your replies.

Thanks,
Shirisha K

Why do you want to jump from IT to Management? If you want to transition, please consider enrolling in an MBA program with a focus on finance, as it offers numerous opportunities.

Thanks for your response. It's not just about jumping from IT to Management; I want to build my career for promotions as a Team Leader or in some other good position instead of working in shifts and seeking a better salary increase with the qualifications to achieve it.

Also, as you had suggested taking Finance in an MBA, I understand this requires a background in Accounts, which I don't have.

Thanks,
Shirisha K

Yes, as you fear, it would be difficult for students from a non-finance stream to switch to finance, though it's not impossible. For someone with a B.Tech-EEE background, a combination of Marketing and HR might be more suitable, especially since you already have over 3 years of experience in the IT field. It wouldn't be a bad idea to specialize in Software (SW) or Hardware (HW) courses in the short term, say 6 months to less than a year, which are currently in high demand in the job market. This will help you stay relevant before the demand cools down after 2 years, around the time you complete the course. All the best.
