Struggling to Re-enter IT After a 2-Year Gap: Can I Find Opportunities in the US or India?

raypri
I made a capital mistake by quitting my job with a reputed IT company after my marriage and moving to the US to be with my husband. I have been trying to find a job here since then, but to no avail. The job market has been tough, especially in the US, and now the employment gap has widened to about 2 years. Additionally, I don't have prior US work experience, although I have worked in India and abroad for nearly 9 years. When companies approach me here, they back out upon learning that I haven't been employed for almost 2 years, despite having a valid work permit and the necessary skills.

Possibility of Re-entering the IT Field

Is there a possibility for me to re-enter the IT field or explore opportunities elsewhere, both in India and the US?

Thank you.

I am a bit confused. Does your husband have American citizenship? If not, I was told that spouses from India cannot work in the States (I have a number of friends whose children are in that position).

If someone offers you a job in India, are you prepared to move there away from your husband?

Thank you for your response, Simhan. We both hold Green Cards now, and I started my search more strongly after I had the GC in hand. However, in 2 years, my search has been in vain! Now the situation is, we had to rethink our plans and thought of the option that if I were to get an offer in India, I would definitely take that up provided other factors like pay, etc., and remain in India for a while before I decide to return.

There is another catch; being on a Green Card, I can be away from the US only for a year or so, given a statement to the USCIS for the reason of my visit to India and stay for longer than 1 month. If it takes longer, my GC stands canceled. I am unsure if my husband stays on in the USA, I being the Green Card dependent, would my GC still be canceled in, say, about 3 years? I have to still look up for this.

But my initial query was, is there a chance that I can get back to working full-time after this long gap in the US or India? What are the chances of this?

Job Opportunities for Green Card Holders

As a Green Card holder, depending on the company's needs, you may secure a job if you are honest with them and communicate your intentions clearly. Some companies may prefer hiring individuals who do not require a visa to work in the United States, thus saving them the effort of obtaining one for their employees.

I am based in the UK and am unfamiliar with the job market in India. How was your relationship with your former bosses at the company in India? Did you establish a strong network of contacts during your time there? If so, I suggest reaching out to them as they may be able to offer valuable advice and guidance to help you in your job search.
