What Management Lessons Can We Learn from the India vs Pakistan Cricket Match?

shilpa.u
Hi Friends,

I hope we enjoyed yesterday's match a lot.

I believe yesterday's match is somewhat related to management, where we can learn from it. What we can observe is:

1. Even average people can perform well. In the organization, we should not only concentrate on top performers (e.g., Sachin in cricket) but also on the average people.
2. Lateral Skills: Lateral skills where a good bowler is also a good batsman. Similarly, in management, many employees may have various lateral skills, so we need to make use of them.
3. Leadership
4. Motivation
5. Team spirit

Do you have any observations to share?

Congratulations, India.

Shilpa

20-20 cricket is like gambling. The result can be changed in 5-10 minutes, and it cannot be compared to a 50-over match. In a fifty-over match, we need consistent batsmen and here the big names like Dada and Sachin will dominate, at least for the next two years. Then other big names will emerge.

Our win in the World Cup was due to the dedication and team spirit shown by the youngsters. Also, Dhoni is a good motivator, and his tactics were successful. He made the right move in putting Yousef Pathan to open the innings and mixing bowlers in tight situations.

Let Dhoni and his team bring more success and fame to the Indian Cricket Team and joy to all Indians. Long live India.

Sometimes while managing people, we need to rely on a person's capabilities even when he is not performing well. This is quite similar to the situation where Sreesanth was hit for 20 runs in his first over, but Dhoni gave him a second over to bowl, which was a maiden one. Later on, Sreesanth took a wicket as well; his catch in the 20th over was also very crucial. I think it was the World Cup, not the ball, which he caught for the last wicket of Pakistan.

Again, Dhoni, while deciding whom to give the 20th over to bowl when 12 runs were needed for Pakistan to win, asked Bhajji whether he would like to bowl. Bhajji refused because he was not getting proper yorkers. Sometimes it is better to ask for employees' opinions regarding any task. Then he chose Joginder Sharma.

Really, it was a nail-biting, breathtaking match in which the Indian youth team has shown their potential.

To my mind, 20-20 is the toughest of all the formats because it is like giving a three-hour exam where one simply has to hit out, get wickets, etc. Dhoni said so in an interview a couple of days ago when he admitted that it was quite a drain on both the body and the mind. There is no place for non-performers. From a spectator's point of view, why should one wait for eight hours to get much more in three - return on time and money. This view is backed by no less than another victorious captain - Kapil Dev.

For the match specifically, it could have gone either way. Pakistan should be appreciated for giving a tremendous fightback and a great final.

When queried on leadership, Dhoni more often than not replies, "I have always told the guys to enjoy themselves without bothering about the outcome." In real life, one cannot always do it to the same degree, but much of what he said is there on the blog - "Make your passion your profession" - http://mypyp.wordpress.com/. Kapil Dev has himself said the same thing on several occasions and in his autobiography.

A specific article entirely devoted to Dhoni's philosophy on leadership:

A lot of career consultants in the United States give most weightage to what is called passion quotient. God knows when the HR consultants in India shall wake up.

Dear all,

Heartiest congratulations!! Chak De India :D :D

Yesterday our MD announced that if India wins the World Cup - then next day(today) would be a holiday!! :) :) am enjoying every bit of the same.

Shilpa..thanks for starting this wonderful thread and also convey my regards to Kerela Hr , Amit ( both) ,Tarun Sharma, Hiren and Hassan.

Recieved an e-mail ( as reproduced herewith) from RK Dhanvada,Recruitment Consultant & CEO Coach,D & HR Consultants , Hyderabad,e-mail id : rk@dhanvada. com which beautifully summarizes the rise of Young Indian Turks!.

Guess whatever Prashant did and other participant did in the last 7-8 Pre final stage of reaching the top made was a perseverant effort using their passion and conviction.. Not the educational marksheet and degrees but skill . Prashant coming from a small town in a remote city of West Bengal and that too from Police like dept.. is a reflection that all can achieve . He could not carry his study and to support the family joined West Bengal Police. He had not formal Music training excepting hours of practice and conviction to make to a world class one day soon. He new that it was possible if only he made ¡° effort ¡° .. In the qualifying round , he forgot the words of the song. Coming from Nepali origin , it is indeed amazing to be an Indian Idol !!

Just note small town talents like Rudra Pratap Singh ¨C cricket bowler from Rae Bareli or Piyush Chawla from Aligarh , , Sreesant is from Kothamangalam in Kerala , Suresh Raina from Muradnagar in Ghaziabad , Kaif from Allahabad , Irfan Pathan and his brother Yusuf Pathan grew in Madrasa in Baroda . Munaf Patel is from Bharuch village in Gujarat whose father recently bought a TV to watch his son . Lets not forget our Dhoni is from Ranchi in Jharkhand,.

The small town yearnings are different to grow and succeed. They are not the victims of Metro town culture of peer life style. They always have a strong foundation and self belief to become a world class. They are not complacent and fortunately have family support that does not pamper them .

Hi Shilpa,

First, let me congratulate the whole Indian team. Adding to your views, in short, let me remind you that the discussion about the team composition is centered on the need to have both youth and experience together. Similarly, in any organization, we require a blend of both young and experienced individuals.

What do you say, members?

Regards,
Amith R.
shilpa.u
Thank you, Ram.

Yes, of course, both are required for the organization. That's what I am saying - not only to the senior employees but also to average performers, we have to give a chance to excel.

Thank you, Amith. Experienced individuals should train the younger generation.

Shilpa

Hi friends,

It was a nail-biting match. The result of the Ind vs Pak game is always unpredictable until the last ball. Congratulations to the Indian team for achieving such success in the future years. This young team truly deserves this win.

Thank you, Slipa. Your analysis is excellent.

ASK - Attitude, Skill, & Knowledge - is very important. If one has the winning spirit, definitely he or she will win.

Hi Shilpa,

I observed and learned the following from the winners:

1. Leadership - leading from the front.
2. Enthusiasm - unending.
3. Teamwork - each member of the Indian team was seen "focused."
4. Karm Kiye Ja mat kar parwah phal ki.
5. Focused mind - complete concentration and innovative thinking.

I will never forget this Indian Team winning the World Cup. Even the selectors are stunned with the victory. When you carry the label of Great India, you should not consider anything else other than "MERIT." But it has never been so in India. Outside influences and self-interests rule the selection of sports teams which represent India at International forums. INDIA comes first, thereafter only something else. That should be the attitude of selectors. My belief is that there is no dearth of excellent players in India. Only God can give them SANITY.

Yours Truly,

Hi Shilpa,

Congratulations to you and all cricket lovers. I do agree with your mentioned points. We should give a chance to all levels of people whom we generally ignore.

In yesterday's match, Dhoni rightly used bowler Joginder, who bowled the last over in the match. I read in today's paper that Dhoni was saying Joginder was eager to perform in an international match, but an experienced player like Bhaji was not confident to play a yorker. Dhoni understood the situation and made the right decision.

Yes, it is really thrilling. One thing we can all learn from this is that if we work hard and collaborate in a dedicated manner, then undoubtedly luck will also be in our favor. However, if we solely rely on luck without the aforementioned qualities, we are likely to face failure.

Please let me know if you need further assistance or revisions.

Thank you, Shilpa, for keeping the momentum of the win still exciting. I can sum up the Boys in Blue's performance in the T20 final in just three words - "WE MADE HISTORY." I wish every cricket-loving Indian celebrates this victory. I hope our team continues in the same vein in the future. CHAK DE INDIA.

Hi Shilpa,

Wonderful idea to post this nice topic. I have waited over the years ever since I saw India defeat Pakistan in the final in the 1985 Australia Cup, which was sort of a World Cup to celebrate 100 years of MCC. This was truly amazing. Kudos to the team. What a victory.

On the lighter side of it... Misbah, when he played the shot, thought he was sending the ball to no man's land. He forgot the most important point... There is a Malayalee in every corner of the world. 😄😄😄😄😄 No hard feelings anyone.

Thank you all for sharing your thoughts and inputs on the most relevant topic of the period - India as the Twenty20 World Champion. From nowhere, we have reached this far. It's a great achievement.

I don't know whether you all read it or not, but I have been observing this phenomenon from the beginning, actually from the time Australia lost to Zimbabwe and the Bowl out happened. I believe the Indian team played a cool and mature cricket throughout and did not get carried away by superstition and belief.

Dhoni rightly said, "I live in the present," and he was shifting gears according to the terrain. Biking is a significant passion, and for many of you who ride a motorbike, you know better how you see the world from a different perspective than when you drive a car or a bus. He effectively utilized his biking management skills on the field.

One thing that saddens me is the way team members are flooded with financial and material gifts after this win. My suggestion is that these cricketers should lead by example and contribute at least a part of it to the development of other sports in their region.

This victory also highlights that sports personalities from villages or the countryside are emerging at the national and international levels in abundance compared to the highly privileged and politically powerful individuals from metropolitan areas.

Awareness can only be generated and impacted by those present in India. Those working outside have a limited role other than supporting initiatives or providing suggestions.

Sincere thanks once again, and best wishes to all active participants of this truly constructive forum. I hope to see it grow stronger in terms of membership and the quality of articles created by its members. This platform is excellent for showcasing creative management and HR skills.

God Bless,

Ramesh Menon

Hi,

What a great match it was - a real test of nerves! Both teams should be congratulated for putting up such a match. Congratulations to both the nations as both were knocked out from the World Cup in the first round earlier this year.

It is the best example of leadership. This win shows that with good leadership, even average guys can perform miracles. Congrats India. Keep it up Dhoni.

Hi Friends,

Thank you very much for sharing your valuable ideas with us. Ramesh, the idea you have is really good; i.e., the amount they have received, a part of it is given to the development of sports. But that is also one kind of motivation to perform well.

Hi all,

We have two World Cups at home this year:
1. Hockey World Cup, and
2. 20-20 World Cup.
It's an amazing experience, especially after 24 long years of wait. Three Cheers for India...

The excitement when I watched the movie "Chak De India" came alive not once but twice... :)
Right motivation to the right people at the right time works...

T20 World Cup brought a wonderful result due to the consistent and spectacular performance of our Indian Team. It all began from the first match against Pakistan, where we could see the determination to win, especially in the bowling department. In the subsequent match against England, there was a good partnership in batting and a great innings from Yuvraj Singh, along with excellent fielding by the team. Against South Africa, the team displayed a strong bowling performance, and in the match against the reigning world champions, there was a brilliant performance by the entire team.

In the final match against Pakistan, Mr. Dhoni's leadership was evident in fully utilizing the skills of all team members. The morale of the whole story is: "Do your best and give your fullest effort, and the results will definitely come your way." "Success is not an easy achievement until you take the first step towards it." "Enjoy the journey of life instead of just contemplating it."

Dear friend,

Well done and well contributed by my dear fellow friends about their noble idea:

1. It is not just the ask of an individual to excel, but it is the ask of a team.
2. A team is coordination, communication, and consistency of all working for a common goal.
3. To instill in each other the inspiration of excelling in his/her work, which is undoubtedly "leadership skills."
4. To provide adequate power boosters in the form of rewards, both punishment and appreciation. Where punishment is not to humiliate but to instill in group members the effect of non-performing on others and a team, and thus to improve. Appreciation to further increase and/or maintain the performance.
5. To manage others with the "decision-making ability" and "execution."
6. Last but not the least, "belief in teamwork," and showing full "confidence of authority & responsibility" to imbibe in others the same.

Thanks and regards

Hi all,

It's nice, and we can see in this 20-20 match that timely and stable play will be required for winners. The only reason for the loss of the Pakistan team is the last batsman's overconfidence. So, I believe that whatever achievements or heights we reach, we should be stable and careful in our approach.

Thank you all, Raghunath Deepala.
