Stuck Between HR and R&D: Should I Switch Roles or Seek a New Job?

Gagandeep Kour
I am working as an HR Executive with an IT company for the past 6 months. This is my first job, and I have no prior experience in the HR field since I was a B.Tech student and graduated in 2012. I quite enjoy the HR work, but the company is now offering me a project coordination role in R&D. I do not wish to change my profile and am thinking of a job change. Please advise.

Choosing a Career Aligned with Your Qualifications

It is better if you opt for a job that aligns with your core subject. Seeking a job outside your profession may bring happiness temporarily, but later you may regret it. The problem arises when you change companies, as they may ask for qualifications and credentials relevant to your job. In such cases, you may find yourself in an awkward position. Hence, it is advisable to choose a profession that aligns with your qualifications.

As you have an interest in the HR field and there is a crunch of jobs in IT for BE graduates, you can consider pursuing a career in HR. Looking ahead, you may choose to pursue an MBA/PGDBM externally at your convenience. If your current company is only offering you limited opportunities, you have the option to decline that and continue in HR. Otherwise, you can start exploring new job opportunities as a recruiter or executive in a small or medium-sized company.

Thanks.

If you enjoy HR work and wish to continue your career in it, then you can pursue a certification course in HR such as CHRP or PGD in HRM, etc. Doing this will make your resume more valuable, and you will have two different career paths to consider. However, if you prefer a profession related to B-Tech, then having six months of experience is not a major obstacle for changing your career path.
