How Can Education Empower Villages to Become Self-Sufficient and Frugal?

avsjai
All the wealth in the world cannot help one Indian village if the people are not taught to help themselves. Our work should be mainly education, both moral and intellectual. Educate the people so that they may learn to be self-sufficient and frugal. If the poor cannot come for education, education should reach the poor.

- Swami Vivekananda

Education is indeed a blessing. It would be very unfortunate to be without education. I would like to share the views of the great Thiruvalluvar on this topic. Two gems have been attached as samples. I hope everyone will appreciate the Kurals.

Thank you, Raghu, for your nice message from Kural. In my view, the application of education is more important than mere education. I am much pained to share the below images, which are self-explanatory:

Reflection on Education

How would Swami Vivekananda and Saint Thiruvalluvar explain this if they were alive today? It is the attitude that differentiates most of us from the few of us. I am sure more friends will join in this discussion. Have a nice day...

I am very glad to receive your response. Yes, I agree with you; the purpose of education is beyond acquiring bookish knowledge. The real purpose is to make people better human beings than they previously were. Academic excellence should not bring in arrogance; it should bring in humility and the will to help others, as they say, "ONE CANDLE LIGHTS THE OTHER."
