Struggling with Favoritism: How Can I Implement Policies in a Small Workshop?

Challenges in Implementing Policies in a Small Organization

I am working as an HR Manager in the service industry. I have newly joined this organization two months ago. My organization is a small workshop with 150 employees. One director is the owner of the company, and another director helped start the business.

Two female employees are working in my organization. One is the head of a department, and the other is an assistant manager of another department. Both directors are showing favoritism towards them. One lady is backbiting, and the other is aggressive in a wrong manner.

Both directors are supporting me, but due to this culture, I can't implement policies and systems effectively. In fact, I have prepared the policy and sent it to them, but it has not been approved yet. The owner of the organization wants to bring some professionalism, but again, he always supports that female for any reason. Sometimes he makes decisions based on what the lady says. The other director is also good, but he can't hear anything against his favorite female.

It's affecting the organizational culture.

I am not surprised that there are no responses. You have presented a typical picture of a small Indian private company. What you stated are the realities and characteristics of people in such organizations.

Challenges in Implementing Policies

What is your query? That you are not able to implement policies? As the saying goes, "you can bring a horse to water but cannot make him drink." Another wise saying in management goes like this: "the 'bottleneck' is always at the top." I think that sums it all up. If the owners and people at the top are not interested, then there is hardly anything you can do on your own at this point in time.

I am sorry if it paints a pessimistic picture and makes you feel discouraged, but sometimes one has to accept the situation as it stands. Keep your motivation alive and keep learning. In the future, you'll get ample opportunities to put your abilities to good use.

Warm regards.
