Is It Fair to Leave Without Notice If a Promised Raise Never Happened? Seeking Advice

One of my friends is working in the engineering industry. In December 2012, he resigned for better prospects and submitted his resignation letter to his employer. After completing his one-month notice period, his VP/GM & MD asked him to withdraw his resignation and promised that his salary would be increased starting from 1st February 2013. However, to date, he has not received the promised salary increase from the management. Now, he wants to leave the job immediately by referring to his previously dated resignation. Is it essential to complete the notice period of one month once again?

Since your friend is still working in the company, I presume he has WITHDRAWN his earlier resignation. In which case, he will need to resign AFRESH and also serve the notice period again. He can't take any recourse to ante-date. Even if he didn't formally withdraw the earlier resignation, by and large, it would become invalid since he has continued to work there way beyond the due date. Suggest asking him to LEARN from this experience—on whether to give credence before he accepts any verbal commitments like he did in this case—and move on.
