Curious About Employment Law Differences Between Maharashtra and Karnataka? Let's Discuss!

Sampat Phadtare
We are a Japanese multinational company currently in the process of establishing our third plant in India near Bangalore. We already have two plants, one in Pune, Maharashtra, and the second one in Haryana. In connection with the recruitment for the Bangalore plant, I want to know about any differences in laws or rules between the states of Maharashtra and Karnataka.

HR professionals with knowledge in this area are kindly requested to shed some light on it.

Guidance on Labor Laws Across States

Yes, I concur with Keshav on the matter. I am certain you already have a consultant for all your labor matters in Maharashtra/Haryana; they should be able to guide you on this.

However, as a corporate entity, we must be aware of all the laws of the land, as interpretations of the same might differ from person to person. The best way to learn about them is to visit the nearest Labor Commissioner Division Office and seek guidance from them. Usually, around this office, there are also various book stalls selling related books which will be helpful for you moving forward.

You will agree that although consultants are beneficial and work for our benefit, it's better to equip ourselves with all the requirements rather than totally relying on them for surprises later.

Wishing you all the best.

Dear Sampat,

Differences in Labor Laws Between Maharashtra and Karnataka

There are law differences between Maharashtra and Karnataka.

• You need to appoint 100% local people in the labor class group (local means a resident of Karnataka).

• There is a minimum wage difference (lesser than Maharashtra), and it will increase yearly once (in April).

• Regarding recruitment, there are no rules except for the labor class.

It is my suggestion that if you face difficulties, tie up with a local consultant for recruitment purposes and seek the local consultant's advice for a legal opinion.

For any help, you can contact me anytime.
