Transitioning from Marketing to HR: Is It Possible with My Background and Experience?

Hi seniors, I want to know if it is possible to change from Marketing to HR in another company. I work in an e-commerce company with almost 6 months of experience. I want to transition to HR in another company or industry. I hold an MBA in HR & Marketing (both majors). So, is this switch possible? Will it impact my experience in any way?

However, you need to understand why you want to make this change and ensure that it aligns with your aptitude and personality. Some individuals continuously switch from one field or industry to another in pursuit of elusive comfort, only to end up disappointed when they don't find it. Thank you for the response, sir. To be frank, I chose to pursue marketing because I was not finding good opportunities in HR, and I did not want to remain idle at home after completing my MBA. However, my ultimate goal is to work in HR. I have completed my summer training, projects, and other related activities in HR. Sir, would the 6 months of marketing experience be considered when transitioning back to HR?

At the outset of attempting to make a career change from one stream to another, one should be clear about the new challenge ahead. If you are interested in switching jobs from Marketing to Human Resources, you should provide additional elaboration on how your experience can make you a strong candidate for a position in HR.

Be Strategic in Your Approach

For instance, instead of saying, "I'd love to put my learning and contribute as much to Human Resources," consider a more compelling statement than simply stating, "Since I have an MBA in HR and Marketing, I am seeking a job in HR." Which one sounds more appealing?

Keep your explanation concise, especially if you are entering entry-level positions as a fresher. If you aspire to progress and succeed in a significant way, be prepared to start from the ground up.

It will not have an impact unless you frequently switch jobs from HR to other fields and then to something else. I hope this provides you with some insight.

You have an MBA, with specialties in both HR and Marketing. You chose a Marketing job that came your way first. How do you feel in the job? If you are okay with it and have adequate scope for development, I would suggest you continue in Marketing itself, even if one or two shifts of organizations are required later for a better position and salary.

However, if you are passionate about HR work, which is not as glamorous in organizations as portrayed in textbooks and cases, you may consider making a firm decision to change and explore the best opportunity in that field at the earliest. HR job opportunities are much fewer compared to marketing roles. Your 6 months of experience in marketing may not be considered as HR experience unless you have also become proficient in PR and communication.
