Understanding PF Maturity: Is the 8.5% Interest Calculated Monthly or Yearly?

Can anyone help me with how to calculate PF maturity? I know the PF interest rate is 8.5%, but I want to understand how the interest rate calculation works. Could you please clarify whether the interest rate is calculated on a monthly or yearly basis?

Please provide an example or case study to explain this to me.

PF interest will be calculated on the closing balance as of March 31, 2013.
