World Social Work Day 2013
World Social Work Day is about recognizing the significant contribution that social work makes to the well-being of people and society. In Fife, over 22,000 people are supported and cared for by Social Work Services. Today, we have the chance to highlight the valuable contribution those working in Social Work Services make, whether it's with older people in residential or nursing care, protecting children from harm, or providing support to adults with disabilities.
Stephen Moore, Fife Council's Executive Director of Social Work Services, said: “Without doubt, our frontline staff do a vital and often critical job—making a real difference to people's lives at times of personal or family need. Fife's Social Work Service provides support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Much of what staff do goes unseen by the general public but is very much welcomed and valued by service users.
“World Social Work Day is an opportunity for us all to reflect on the contribution Social Work staff make, supporting people to remain in their own homes and community; protecting and supporting children, older people, and adults; or helping people who have committed offenses to change their behavior. The dedication and professionalism of Social Work staff is second to none, and we recognize individual achievements at our annual awards ceremony and through national award nominations and successes. But we must not forget the everyday differences that all staff make to people's lives.
“Here in Fife, our aim is to provide the right services to the right people at the right time and in a way that meets their needs and improves the quality of their lives. With increasing demand for services, we continue to focus on how services are delivered so that they better meet the needs of vulnerable people and are delivered cost-effectively and to a high standard. Whatever happens in the future, service users will always remain at the heart of what we do.”
