Should I Stay or Move On? Navigating Career Choices as an HR Generalist in a Private Company

I am currently working as an HR Generalist in a private limited company. I want to work for a corporate. I will be completing 6 months this May. I just want to know, should I continue working in this company for more time or start looking out for a better opportunity? How many years of experience are required to get into a good position in a good limited company?

I am currently working as an HR generalist in a large manufacturing company. The role of an HR generalist is vast, encompassing all areas of HR including Recruitment, Selection, Induction, Training & Development, Payroll and wage administration, Contract labour, Liaisoning, Safety, Motivation, Retention, Industrial Relations, Full and Final Settlement, and so on. Therefore, I believe that a minimum of 3 years of experience is necessary to gain exposure before considering a move to a better job.

Mr. Rajeev has given you a very good suggestion. Yes, Pranitha, you may say 6 months is almost a negligible amount of experience to expect the desired job in the HR field. You may ask for a hike in pay after completing at least a year.

I agree with the views above. Many people strive hard to get an HR Generalist post to gain exposure to all HR functions. You are among the fortunate ones to have achieved that. Continue to work for a minimum of 2-3 years, build on your achievements, and then consider exploring other opportunities.

As all have suggested already, being an HR Generalist is a very good job role to start a career with because one has the whole gamut of HR to handle and take care of.

Reasons for Considering a Change

However, I wish to ask, why do you plan to change? Is it because the firm is a private firm and is smaller compared to big corporates? Or is it that the profile you're working on is not the one that motivates you? Or is there any other reason?

Just to make you feel comfortable, I would like to share my incident. While I had got this job (I guess around a similar time frame or maybe a month earlier than you), in my initial days, I was in a double mind whether to look out in corporate for they'd give me a brand as well as better pay. But now with almost 6 months down the line, I feel good I never got a chance to switch because I have so much to learn and handle. I am the only HR here and am developing the whole HR department. Honestly, no matter whichever corporate hires me, they'd already have HR in place, and I would not have the liberty to work with my ideas.

In my current firm, my CEO has given me complete liberty to do my work the way I want. There is nothing like a good or bad idea; it's all a learning process...
