Background Verification is not done simply. Candidates proven track of experience certificates should be held by you before scheduling to any reference checks. I second Mr. Raj Kumar Hansdah, in taking different means to evaluating applicants for verifying education, previous work experiences and other information (credentials listed on entrants resume).
Since your's is a small firm I would insinuate to collect any information from the internet or social networking sites which might determine you with positively rather than approaching any employer directly.
