Career Dilemma: Is Moving to a Lower Title for a Better Brand and Pay Worth It?

Dear All,

Please guide me. Is it okay for a person who has achieved a very good designation at a young age but with a less reputed private company on an average package to move to a lower designation but with a higher package, a reputable brand and banner, and a relatively larger area of responsibilities? Would his previous higher designation be considered for his further progress in his career afterwards?

To my knowledge, it is not wrong. Check which job gives you job satisfaction, learning, relevant responsibility, experience, etc. Designation doesn't matter for working.

As John says, designation does not matter. I had a similar situation in the past, but I made the right decision at that time, which has given me a lot to learn and better prospects in life. If you are interested in package/designation, then you will not get the exposure of working in bigger companies, especially in HR.

You must go ahead if you are getting better responsibilities in a bigger or better company, especially with a higher salary. Don't worry about the designation. Firstly, please understand that designations have different meanings and importance in different companies. What would you do with the designation if you are not getting proper learning or exposure?

It depends upon your individual priority.

Do you care more for the designation or the work responsibility? Would you be happy with the money in a small organization or feel proud working in a big company? Would you feel a little hesitant telling your friends and known people that you are in a lower position? If you choose the big company, and after a while, you leave the organization, giving another interview would be a bit of a problem, as the interviewer may probably think why did you work for a lower designation. Also, a wide area of responsibility means what? Maybe more manpower time. Can you afford to give that?

It depends on what you want in life—your aspirations, goals, aim, etc. If I had a choice, I would have opted for the big company because working with a big company with many people and learning more would be my first priority.

Thank you all for the valuable suggestions. As everyone agreed, one should always opt for a bigger company for learning and hardcore job experiences. Even I myself carry the same opinion. I was a bit confused after having your opinions but can now take a firm decision. Thanks a lot once again! 😀

I do agree with what you say.. chote jungle ka raja hona zyada behtar hai bajay bade jungle ki bakri hone se. (I don't know what is it in English).

But what to do when you do not feel there is much to do (actually when there is no scope for further improvements, not a single sign of it)... and you are bounded from so many angles that you cannot put a single step further on your own?

I feel then what others have said so far is right. If you have something to share on this, I would like to hear from you, if you can, please. This would help me in making a decision. Please help me out.
