Job Requirement Dilemma: Do I Really Need to Hand Over My Original Certificates?

Good Morning Everyone, Is there any condition to hand over the original certificates to the company I am working for?

Hi, you have to show all your original certificates at the time of joining the company, but the company cannot retain your original certificates. They can only keep photocopies of all the original certificates.

Hi, if a company keeps your original certificates, it is illegal. Please do not join this type of company. Try finding another company. I have no judgment in this favor.

Good Morning Everyone, I am working in a private limited company. It is agro-based and a good company. Regarding the original certificates, a new rule came into effect this February 13. How can I talk to my employer about these original certificates?

In my view, original certificates are required for verification purposes. No company can forcefully keep the original certificates nor any kind of original documents. Companies or HR need to explain why originals are required.

It has been rightly said that original certificates cannot be retained by your employer. However, taking these for purposes of verification, providing a formal receipt to the employee, and returning the certificates within a specified period (say, 7 to 15 days) is a legitimate practice in some organizations.

If any organization feels that they can retain employees by keeping original certificates, they are sadly mistaken. People, in general, are well aware of their rights these days, and such mischievous practices can only lead to multiple problems, including creating suspicion in the minds of employees about the ethical behavior of HR.

Calling for Original Certificates

Employers ask for the original certificates only for verification purposes. The idea is that photocopies of the originals are to be filed in the employee's personal file.
