Difference Between Competency Mapping & Competency Assessment

I want to know the difference between competency mapping and competency assessment. Brief description of both would be helpful.

Hi Sudhir,

I would firstly mention - Competency Mapping is Step 1 and Competency Assessment would come later.

Coming in to the difference between the two. For your reference -

Competency Mapping -

Competency mapping is a way of assessing the strengths & weaknesses of a worker or organization.

It's about identifying a person's job skills and strengths in areas like teamwork, leasership, and decision-making.

Many competency mapping models break down strenghts into two major areas:

Functional Skills - Practical knowledge that a person needs to perform a job.

These skills are generally easy to measure through skill tests or task-specific questions.

They can help define whether a worker is capable of carrying out his or her basic responsibilities.

Behavioral Skills - Involves personal skills such as leadership, active listening, teamwork, and morale.

Crafting questions and tests that accurately identify behavioral strengths and weaknesses can be difficult, because a worker may try to answer in a way that makes hi m look his best rather than providing an honest response.

This type of testing is important for getting a complete picture of an individual's skill set.

Competency Assessment

It is an ongoing process of continually building knowledge and skills.

The key to compentency assessment is that it is based on actual skills and knowledge that a person can demonstrate in the workplace or other contexts.

The problem with testing is that it doesn't guarantee that a person will be able to do something - it just verifies that they know something.

A typical assessment process involves foll steps:

Self Assessment

Workplace Assessor reviews evidence

Identify Development Needs

On and Off the Job Learning

Reassessment / Award Qualification
