Transitioning from Recruitment to Corporate HR: How Prepared Am I and What’s the Timeline?

Hi everybody, I have just started as a fresher and I am part of recruitment. However, I want to be a part of Corporate HR. There is just one question in my mind – does being a recruiter provide enough preparation to transition into Corporate HR? If the answer is yes, then how many years of experience does one need to become a part of Corporate HR?

Understanding Corporate HR

Being a recruiter is not enough to be part of Corporate HR. Corporate HR is a multidimensional function encompassing various HR functions, including recruitment, talent management, learning and development, employee engagement, organizational development, industrial relations, benefits management, and statutory compliance, etc.

Corporate HR consists of various levels, from junior management to senior and top executive levels. Therefore, you need to climb the Corporate HR ladder. There cannot be a definite answer as to how fast you move up the ladder. It all depends on your talent and exposure and how you address the opportunities and challenges that come your way.

As rightly pointed out by Mr. Saikumar, Corporate HR activities encompass much more beyond recruitment. The policies are formulated at Corporate HR. If the company operates a multi-unit setup at different locations, then Corporate HR must rationalize the pay scales, incentive schemes, transfer rules, determine various entitlements for different cadres, establish promotional policies, and plan for employee career growth, among other responsibilities. Some individuals prefer to work in operational units before transitioning to Corporate, as this provides them with firsthand experience in field jobs.
