Career Dilemma: Should I Choose IT Recruitment or the Hotel Industry? Seeking Advice!

Please help me urgently, I need suggestions. I have 2 years of experience in the retail industry and now want to change jobs. I have received offers from the hotel industry and an IT recruitment consultancy. Please suggest which option is better for me to choose.

I can say that working in an Executive HR role is better compared to recruitment. This is because, in an executive position, you can learn various things, whereas in a recruitment role, you mainly focus on recruitment activities. Making wise decisions will lead us towards better opportunities.

Working in the Hotel Industry

Working in the hotel industry will expose you to various processes in departments such as F&B, Purchasing, Housekeeping, Rooms, and Divisions, among others, from an HR perspective.

Working in Information Technology

Additionally, the information technology field evolves rapidly, with recruitment activities limited to sourcing and clientele-related tasks. As this is a consultancy role, your responsibilities will include candidate search, application reviews, and conducting interviews.

Every industry has its own standards and requirements that dictate job descriptions tailored to specific business needs.

I would recommend you to take the HR executive job offered by the hotel, as this will give you more exposure to HR activities and a good future scope for landing in the HR profession. However, the challenge in taking a job in the hotel industry is that you will have to do a lot of learning and put in extended working hours. You will learn a lot, and you also need to read extensively about HR processes. Starting may be difficult, but it will become more comfortable for you as long as you put in hard work.

The secret of choosing a job lies in knowing why you will let every other opportunity pass by! To all of us, the HR role at the hotel is way more promising as it will offer you an in-house HR position and continuity in the service sector. However, you need to be very clear about the challenges you would face in both places and what role you would like to grow into next. If you have a recruiter's role with Randstad or another equally big global player, it might be a better choice to join them. Visualize the role where you would like to be in 3-5 years from now and then choose the option that takes you closest to it.

Even though you have not specified the exact role offered by the hotel, the mentioned requirements are usually necessary in this field.

However, if you are good at hotel management or being a Relationship Manager, considering your background in the retail industry, you may find the hotel industry a better fit compared to HR. Kindly weigh your options based on your interests and long-term career goals before making a decision.

I second that there is no guarantee, which is why he needs to pick the one that will take him closest to his dream role. If he wants to get promoted as a Manager, he needs to pick up roles that will offer him a full view of all the responsibilities. Scaling up his capabilities through managing diversified responsibilities will earn him the role eventually with any employer, if not the current one. If he wants to establish himself as a specialist, he needs to take up the role by the recruitment firm where he will manage every function from sourcing to managing different companies as clients to his employer. We trust that if he keeps his eyes on the responsibilities and learns every lesson from them, he will make it to where he wants to be.

Well, from my own experience, as I have worked in hotels, hospitals, corporate, BPO, IT, and retail, I would strongly recommend going for the hotel industry. It is always a rising sector, and rarely do hotels or hospitals get closed down. You will experience a good working culture, environment, and learning opportunities, especially in areas like care, courtesy, employee relations, and recruitment of all types from civil engineers to housekeepers, chefs, CFOs, IT specialists, and cocktail experts.

The hotel industry is an industry in itself with all departments under one roof, including front office, housekeeping, F&B service, F&B production, kitchens, stewarding, engineering, reservations, security, sales, banquets, marketing, financial control, planning, projects, media, creative cell, HR, legal, admin, liaisoning, training & development, and laundry, to name a few.

Moreover, it is an organization where the focus is on guest service. Therefore, HR is also aligned accordingly, and the opportunities for learning and growth are immense. Starting from the hotel industry, after a few years, you can shift to any other corporate sector like BPO, healthcare, retail, or the service industry. Most large old corporate groups have realized the critical importance of taking care of their customers, both internal and external, in today's global perspective.

So, have faith, courage, and the right attitude. Join the hotel industry. However, let me warn you—the glamour in the hotel is only for the guest. For employees, it's all about hard work and guest delight.
