Paid Holiday on a Sunday: Do We Get an Extra Day Off?

KAMALDEEP PORIYA
What is the process when a paid holiday falls on a Sunday? Will any additional holiday be given?

Thank you.

Dear all,

What is the process when a paid holiday falls on a Sunday? Will another holiday be given in its place?

Hi Kamaldeep, usually, every organization provides 10-13 paid holidays. Some organizations follow a strict holiday calendar where holidays falling on weekly offs cannot be changed.

However, holiday policies are evolving, and adjustments are being made when holidays coincide with weekly offs. It is important to note that this adjustment is not considered a compensatory off. A comp off is typically granted to employees who work on holidays or weekly offs and are compensated for their time.

Based on your company's policy, you should adjust the leaves accordingly. This year, there are many holidays falling on Sundays and Saturdays, particularly concerning employees in a 5-day workweek setup. Organizations may choose to offer additional festive holidays to accommodate this.

Our usual practice includes providing combined holidays during Diwali and New Year (last week of December) so employees can plan vacations with their families.

Hope this information is helpful. :)

Paid Holiday Falling on a Sunday

When a paid holiday happens to be a Sunday, there is no need to give that holiday (I assume your office/factory is closed on Sunday). There is no need to give an alternate day as a holiday. However, if the management wishes to give an alternate day as a holiday, nothing in the act prevents that.

As Ankita said, you can make a decision considering your company's policy on adjusting holidays to other days, though it is not mandatory to do so.

If a company has different weekly offs for different department personnel, then we cannot satisfy all the employees; it is their hard luck. For example, in hotels and restaurants, the staff have different weekly offs, and if a public holiday falls on their day off, it cannot be adjusted with another day. I hope this clarifies your needs.
