You can read Competence at Work by Spencer & Spencer . This is probably the best book on competency mapping and is used by major consultancies to implement the competency Model.
Let me know in case you have any questions.

Hi all:
I am doing research on CM and found the following books very helpful:
"The Handbook of Competency Mapping" by Seema Sanghi (Response Books -Sage)
"The Competencies Handbook" by Steve Whiddett & Sarah Hollyforde (Jaico Books)
"Competency & the Learning Organization" by Donald Shandler (Viva)
"Competency Based HRM" by Ganesh Sherman (TMH).
Hope it helps you, too.
