Notice Period Dilemma: How Can I Join My New Job on Time?

Respected members of Cite HR, I am writing to you regarding my issue with the notice period in my company. I am working in a consulting firm in Hyderabad, and my on-paper notice period is 15 days. I submitted my resignation on 2nd January, and my manager accepted it on 4th January. The reason behind my resignation was to pursue a new and challenging opportunity, which I have to join on 16th January.

Request for Suggestions on Notice Period Issue

I would appreciate your views and suggestions on this matter because my HR department states that the notice period would be accounted for from the day the manager accepted my resignation. Please let me know if there are any alternative measures available. I am eagerly awaiting your responses.

Your manager is right. Your notice period starts from the day it is accepted, and you have to complete this period.

The solution to this problem is that you need to speak to your new employer and tell them that, as per your notice period, you have to stay with your current employer for two more days. I'm sure your new employer will understand your concern and allow you to join after the completion of your notice period with your present employer.

There is no problem. Just discuss with your present employer and request him to adjust the relieving by the requested date. Assure him in writing that after joining the new company, you will help them in sorting out any pending matters and spare the time for them if required. I feel they will agree to your request as they appear to be very genuine people.

In case, due to some reason, they are not in a position to accept the request, discuss the matter with the new company and advise them of all the details of your problem and discussions with your old company. I feel they will surely oblige you by shifting the joining date to the 20th of January or so.

So don't worry too much and follow the proper procedures, and the matter will get sorted out.
