Stuck in a Notice Period: How Can I Leave My Job Early Without Burning Bridges?

Hi,

I have resigned from my current company for a better job profile and salary. In the current company, I have to serve a notice period of 2 months, and I can't serve beyond 1 month. I am willing to give a month's salary. However, the current company isn't ready to relieve me before the notice period. They have accepted my resignation in an email format.

Could you please help me with how to deal with this?

Actually, you have no choice.

I am not sure why they want to hold an 'unwilling' employee as we do not expect the same output once the employee submits the resignation.

You may think of talking to the boss at the current company and request an earlier release. You have a better ground if you have completed the current assignment, and work will not suffer due to your non-availability. Else, the company needs to recruit another person in your place, and the company's decision is justified.

You must talk to the other company if they can consider your joining after a month. Also, tell them frankly what happened. However, it is a tricky issue as no company would like to hire an employee who is already on another company's payroll. A lot of issues regarding PF, etc., may also arise.

You cannot hide the fact of the relieving date with the new company as one day or another they will see the letter, and you will end up in an awkward position.

Think over and convince at least one of the companies.

I resigned because I was unhappy with the work, and even after several pleadings, the management didn't give me a chance. I was forced to do something in which I am not interested at all. Now they say it's the company's policy to serve a 2-month notice period, and my future company wants me to join on the given joining date.

Don't worry. In this situation, you apparently have two choices. The old company wants you for 2 months, while the new company wants you in 1 month. Talk to the old company boss and the upper-level management about your problem of non-availability. Assure them that you will try to complete all pending work assignments in 1 month, even without taking any days off during that time.

On the other hand, try to convince your new company boss. Politely inform them that your availability could be more than a month since you have already resigned from your old company. If you show your commitment to join them, they should be willing to wait for another month to have you for the remaining months.

If they still don't understand, don't worry. The world is not too big but not too small either. You are talented, and that's why this new company hired you. So, cheer up and all the best.

Hi, to my understanding, the employees who are on a probation period are requested to give one month's notice. If not, then they will have to pay an amount as per the notice period (i.e., based on their basic salary). On the other hand, if an employee is a confirmed employee, a notice period of up to 3 months is applicable. This depends on the company's rules and regulations.

The typical approach to handling this issue is to discuss it with your boss. Provide a genuine reason for why you wish to leave the organization. Ensure you complete all necessary tasks and participate in an exit interview with your HR manager.
