Struggling to Find the Clause on Substation Exits in Indian Electricity Rules – Can You Help?

dipil
There is a requirement that all substations should have a minimum of two exits. I believe this requirement is from the Indian Electricity Rules. Can anyone direct me to the clause number where this is mentioned? I am unable to locate it. Looking forward to receiving help from any of the forum members.

Thanks in advance.

Dear Dipil, I don't think substations are supposed to have a minimum of two exits. I didn't refer to the IE standard as I don't have it, but I have visited a lot of substations, and most of them have one entry and one exit. It varies with the size of the substation building. I'll try to pull the reference from NFPA 101-2009 if you need it. I could be wrong, though, so please check it out.

Dear Raghu, Thank you for your input. Could you please try to identify the clause number of the same requirement if it is mentioned in NFPA 101-2009 and let me know? Your assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

In the meantime, I came to know that the requirement is within IS 1644 - 1988, Code of Practice for Fire Safety of Buildings (General): Exit Requirements and Personal Hazard.

I have gone through it. There is nothing specifically mentioned about Electrical Sub-stations. However, I think with the following statements from IS 1644, we can conclude that it is required for substations as well:

"2.7.1 General Requirement - All buildings which are more than 15 m in height and all buildings used as educational (B), assembly (D1), institutional (F), industrial (G1), storage (H), and hazardous (J) occupancies and mixed occupancies with any of the aforesaid occupancies, having an area more than 500 m² on each floor should have a minimum of two staircases."

"2.7.13 Industrial (G) 2.7.13.1 Not less than two exits should be provided for every floor or section, including basements used for industrial purposes or uses incidental thereto."

If any of you have further inputs, please let me know.
