Dear All,

Case Studies and Simulations in Strategic Management

Case studies and simulations are thought to be the most effective methods to teach and understand 'strategic management'. I am sharing with you a small case (found from an open source) which would offer many insights to the readers. Hope you find it useful.

Dear Sir, Thanks for the attachment. It is indeed useful. I always say in my training programs, "In today's competitive world, you should know your competitor more than you know yourself." This is very useful for the training programs.

Best regards, Sudhir

Dear Dhaval, I too love case studies as they help me experience situations beyond my own. I have been talking to practitioners and leaders to build a repository. Would you like to join in? Here's what I do: I listen to the problems and note them down, often in an unstructured manner.

Most of these cases are kept away from the public view yet are relevant to all of us. Let us know if you would like to participate; we can collaborate and share them within this community.

Thank you for posting the case study. These case studies do help teach Strategic Management. They used to give such long case studies when I did my Post-graduate Diploma and Masters on a fortnightly basis. However, what I have found while teaching in the 90s, before retiring in 2008, is that my students did not come prepared to discuss when given such long cases.

My colleague and I used to pick cases from the Financial Times and use them on a weekly basis. We would give a number of short pieces to different groups and discuss them in depth. And we gave the long cases for summative assessment.

Dear Mr. Khadir, please let me know if there is anything in particular that you are looking for in strategic management. Since the subject interests me a lot, I have some material, cases, and even caselets on the same. As indicated by Mr. Simhan, caselets can also be an effective tool for understanding SM.

Recommended Reading

'Strategic Management and Business Policy,' a book by Mr. Azhar Kazmi, is a brilliant reference for SM.

My dear professionals, very good study and good interactions. Case studies always help for better understanding and preparation for strategies. I would be thankful if I could get various case studies limited to a maximum of 2 pages, maybe with Q&A.

Look forward to the same.

Thanks,

Please find a case on 'Air Deccan'. This teaching note has been written by Dr. D. V. R. Seshadri, Visiting Professor, and Jane Henry, Research Assistant at the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore. The case and the teaching note were first published in the South Asian Journal of Management Vol. 12, No. 4, Oct-Dec 2005, pp. 94-126. Copyright of the case is held by AMDISA Secretariat. Reprinted by permission of the AMDISA Secretariat.

Besides this, cases on 'WalMart', 'McDonald's', Balaji Telefilms, BMW, etc., can be very useful for SM.

Thank you, everybody, for your contribution to my learning. One of the challenges of using case studies, of course, is the participants' willingness to discuss the case and to draw from it learning that they can apply in their situation. Teaching notes in this regard are really useful with case studies. If any of you have used the case posted by Dhaval Gandhi, I would be most grateful for any feedback on how you did so.

Take care. Happy Training!

Regards, Arshi
