How Should I Explain a Last-Minute Job Title Change to My New Employer?

Hi All, I have been working as a Senior System Operations Specialist in this company for the past 4 years. Currently, I am in the notice period, and during this period, my designation was changed to "Network Service Delivery Engineer - L1" without my knowledge.

I have received a good opportunity elsewhere where I mentioned my designation as "Senior System Operations Specialist." However, my designation has been changed here. Friends, please suggest how I should inform the new organization about this change in designation.

Clarifying Designation Changes

Do you have any letter or email that states your designation, or was the designation communicated to you orally? If the designation is mentioned in the appointment letter or appraisal letter, you can ask your HR to verify the error. If not, go to HR and communicate your problem. Tell HR that you were communicated that your designation is X, and it is printed in the relieving letter as Y, which is not up to the mark of X. This would not only harm your future growth prospects but also make you appear untruthful when you have communicated that you are at X designation. Try to understand their point first, and then you can explain and probe further. Please note to remain calm throughout. Hope it helped :)

Thanks for your reply. I don't have any letter or email that states my designation; it was communicated orally by my previous manager. Today, I have requested my current manager to change my designation to match the previous one. However, he is saying that he doesn't have that designation for the current project and is asking for proof of my previous designation, which I don't have. Now, my problem is how to communicate this change of designation to the new organization. Will this affect my offer? Please help me with this.

Just ask your senior who communicated with you or whoever communicated with him/her about your designation. Ask him to verify the doubts and why it was wrongly communicated to you. If it was correct, it should have been communicated to the HR department or the concerned person. This is a serious issue and needs attention. Please ensure that you speak to all authorities together and clarify the doubts simultaneously; otherwise, they may mislead you. All the best.

Please take note for future reference that whenever you join a new organization, ask for an appointment letter and ensure that it includes your designation, joining date, and the offered CTC so that you can keep it for your reference. Also, whenever there is any modification/appraisal of your salary/designation, ask your employer to provide you with an appraisal letter mentioning the same. It is your right to claim, and no employer can deny it.

The office might not have a practice to issue these formal letters, but they cannot refuse if someone requests them.
