Aamir Khan's Appeal to Combat Malnutrition in India
New Delhi: Pitching to rid the country of malnutrition, actor-producer Aamir Khan appealed to grassroots-level health activists and the local administration across the country to make the mission successful. "I appeal to the ASHAs, Anganwadi workers, sarpanchs; you are the foot soldiers. I appeal to all of them to take this very seriously and make this movement successful," Khan said at the launch of a media campaign against malnutrition.
Role of ASHAs and Anganwadi Workers
ASHAs, the Accredited Social Health Activists, are community health workers instituted by the government to assist in the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM). Anganwadi workers operate under the government's Integrated Child Development Service program as a neighborhood center for healthcare activities like contraceptive counseling and supply, nutrition education and supplementation, and childcare.
Impact of Malnutrition
Talking about the effects of malnutrition, Khan said: "The damage in the first two years does the damage that stays throughout life." "If you love your country, join the movement. How will India become a superpower if we are affected by malnutrition?" he added.
Khan's Involvement in Social Causes
The actor has been attached to social causes and had recently done a television series featuring social issues. He has been associated with the information, education, and communication program of the Women and Child Development Ministry, which was launched by President Pranab Mukherjee. The program will spread the message across the country in 18 languages through television, radio, print, and other media against malnutrition.
