Feeling Stuck in a Small HR Role: How Can I Transition to Bigger Opportunities?

Hi Friends, I have been handling an HR generalist role for the last three years in a very small organization. My responsibilities include recruitment, induction, training, employee engagement activities, taking care of statutory activities, payroll, designing compensation and benefits, performance management, etc. I am the only HR in the organization. I joined this organization as a fresher and have implemented many processes. However, I feel it's time for me to move on since it's a very small organization (an entrepreneurial setup) run by a husband and wife, hence it has its own limitations. I know I cannot learn further, and I feel my growth has come to a halt. Now the question is, what should I do next?

Career Transition Options

a) Can I get an HR generalist role in an MNC or a big setup with 200 to 300 employees without any certification like SAP or ERP, etc., as I don't have one?

b) I am interested in training and development, but I am not sure about taking it as my specialization because I feel there is very limited requirement for trainers in corporates. Most of the trainer's jobs are contract-based.

c) Can I get contact details of any consultant who can help me in giving the right focus?

Friends, I am in deep confusion. Please help me in this regard. I want to take the right step, and your suggestions will help me make a quick decision.

Yes, you will get an opportunity if you have 3 years of experience. If you are strong as a generalist, it is better to stay in the same role. A generalist profile offers more opportunities. Knowledge of SAP and ERP does not matter, even for a strength of 200-300. As you mentioned, there are limited openings for training. Stay in the same organization and keep looking for opportunities.

1. You might get a specific role in an MNC.
2. You might get a higher position where you can oversee almost everything in HR.

You have to decide what you want to do and then search for opportunities that suit your preferences. If you are interested in performing specific activities such as PMS, Recruitment, Compensation and Benefits, Employee Engagement, Training and Development, etc., channelize your search accordingly.

Thank you for the reply. I am open to both options. It all depends on the offerings from the market. I am not sure about the probability of job offerings if I specialize. Currently, I handle all HR activities, and my three years of experience have boosted my confidence. I believe I am ready for the next senior position.
