Stuck Without a Relieving Letter: How Can I Get HR to Release My Documents?

Hi team, I have been working in a software firm and have resigned. I have also completed my notice period. However, I have been asking for my relieving documents, but the HR says they don't have approval from my manager, so they can't provide me with my relieving documents. Please help me; it's very urgent.

If your employer is refusing to generate a relieving letter, in such circumstances, you cannot do anything against them. The only thing you have to do is inform your new employer about the situation. To support your statement, you have to show them your resignation letter, an acknowledged copy of your resignation from your immediate boss, and if possible, obtain a printout of your attendance records if there is attendance software. Can you give more details of the situation? You mentioned that your HR informed you, "we don't have approval from your manager so we can't provide you." Is this true, and if so, why is your manager not giving the approval? Also, where are you located? Your location tag says it's Korea.

Another point: Was your resignation accepted when you resigned? The notice period phase comes later. Unless you give the full details, any suggestions by the members would only be 'surmises' and based on presumptions—and then please don't blame any member for giving you advice/suggestion that's not accurate or realistic. Please give as many details/background as possible regarding the situation—I am sure you will get accurate and practical suggestions.

Understanding the Relieving Process

You say you have served your notice period. If you have completed all the relieving formalities properly, there is no doubt your HR will give you your relieving letter, keeping it in flowers. If they are not providing it, talk to them. Ask what other formalities need to be completed. Maybe your handover is not completed, or there may be other pending issues. Talk to them and reach an understanding. Complete everything accordingly.

Please remember, HR is a mediator and can process your relieving only after receiving clearances from all departments and your HOD, especially. HR is always a service support team to support employees and employers, not to put anybody into trouble. It is a party that considers all parties, excluding its own.
