Is Pursuing a Ph.D. in Management Worth It for My HR Career Growth? Seeking Advice!

Hi Seniors, I have 4.2 years of experience in the HR field and currently work in a software company that is a private limited (PVT LTD) organization. I was recently promoted to Senior HR Executive. I have already completed my MCA & MBA qualifications and am currently pursuing an MA in Psychology as well as Diplomas in Labour Law and Administrative Law through distance education. I am also planning to start a Ph.D. in Management from next year onwards. Will this additional qualification be beneficial for my career growth in the future? I would greatly appreciate your guidance.

Your aim is not spelled out by you. If you wish to become a Faculty/Professor, you have to plan for M.Phil, Ph.D., etc. If you wish to continue as an HR Professional, your MBA (HR), Diploma in Labour Law, M.A. in Psychology, etc. are more than enough as academic qualifications. All you need further concentration on is gaining field experience in HR.

What Suresh said is right. If you want to be in corporate, just focus on gaining more knowledge in recent updates in the HR field and shine yourself. But if you want to shift your profession to teaching or any other field, you can go for M.Phil and Ph.D.

Doing a Ph.D. is a part of learning; it will develop your knowledge. There is no limit to learning. Don't compare studying with work. If you want to pursue a Ph.D., you have a passion for it. Just try it; don't seek suggestions from anybody. For engaging in good things like learning and education, there is no need to ask for suggestions from others; just go ahead.

Your decision to pursue a Ph.D. in Management is magnificent. Are you planning to do it on a regular basis or through distance learning? If it is a distance course, then you can very well continue with your current job as it would be beneficial to gain experience while studying simultaneously.

If you'd like to pursue it through regular attendance, check the courses offered carefully. Many courses may not be conducive to research. You should choose those that can help you establish the right connections and gather the necessary data for your research.

As Mr. Suresh, Sudarshnan, and other members suggested, is your desire linked to a career goal, or do you want to pursue it as a mere passion? In either case, you can go ahead with your decision since acquiring knowledge seems to be your passion, judging by the number of qualifications you have acquired. We should also do things that we love to do since it will enrich our sense of joy and fulfillment, which will have a salubrious effect on our functioning in our careers (as an HR Manager, etc.). Since you want to pursue a Ph.D. in management, it will further complement your job. Additionally, you can also offer yourself as a visiting faculty in Management Institutes if you would like to gratify your teaching impulses. I am with Sharmila Das in supporting your decision.
