Is Switching from HR Executive to Administrator a Career Risk? Seeking Your Advice

deebv
Hello Wise People, My current designation is Executive-HR, but my MD has suggested a new designation, "Administrator," in order to coordinate with other administrative work in the office. However, won't this "Administrator" title be potentially harmful to my career prospects? Please give me your suggestions. I am looking forward to your responses.

Regards,
Deebv.

I don't think so, but it's going to be an added advantage for your profile. Please carry on with your HR work, including this administrator job. It will add weight to your resume as well.

Hi Sai, so how should my new designation look - Executive HR cum Administrator, or just Administrator, or can you suggest a new designation that includes HR tasks and administrative work? Because I have always known the progression in the HR department to be: Executive HR, Senior Executive HR, Assistant Manager HR, Manager HR, General Manager HR. But where does "Administrator" fit into this progression?

Yes, you can use Executive HR/Administrator as a designation. When you progress further in your career, this administrative knowledge will be an added advantage for you. You could become an HR Manager someday, and this administrative knowledge will also benefit you in other ways. So, don't focus solely on designations.

Thanks, Sai, for your suggestions. Since it's my budding career, I am really concerned about the designation. I just don't want to shift away from my focal area.

Don't worry, your key area will be HR only, along with additional responsibilities. I understand your concern, but you will also learn new things too.

Hi Deebv, as suggested by Sai, it is better to have designations such as Executive HR/Admin. In the HR hierarchy, even admin has a hierarchy like Admin-Admin Manager. Once again, admin is part of HR in many organizations.

Thank you.
