How Can I Transition from HR to Education with a Ph.D. After a Career Break?

I want to pursue a Ph.D. in HR. I have completed my master's in Labour Studies from Mumbai University. Please tell me how to go about it? I am based in Kolkata.

After completing my PG, I was working in Industrial Relations in an MNC for about a year. Then I took a break for marriage and childbirth. I wish to change my work area from a management job to an education job. Please guide me.

A Ph.D. is essential if you want to pursue a career in education. You can approach departments in Kolkata University that teach Social Work, or you can explore opportunities at TISS in Mumbai. You have a wide choice of subjects, and their guides can lead you in this direction.

I appreciate your intention to pursue a Ph.D. in HRM. What I want to tell you is that you should consider writing the NET/JRF exam this coming December and then apply for the Ph.D. If you have the JRF qualification, it will be much easier for you to secure admission in any reputed universities.

If interested in regular programs, then also consider the Central University M.Phil and Ph.D. programs in Chandigarh, where you will also receive a stipend. If interested in studying from IGNOU, visit the IGNOU Chandigarh office because IGNOU also provides a Ph.D. in H.R./Labour. Prepare and go for the National Eligibility Test (NET) as well. I am also planning to do this year.

Thank you for your suggestion. What is the scope in the academic field after completing a PhD in HR? Are there vacancies available to apply for the position of assistant professor after clearing the UGC-NET exam? Is it mandatory to first complete a PhD, or can one directly apply for a teaching position after clearing the NET exam?
