Should I Leave My HR Generalist Role for a Better-Paying Training & Development Job?

I completed my MBA in HR in 2012. Currently, I am working in a consultancy, which is a start-up, and my profile is HR Generalist. I don't have any experience. I am a complete fresher. My compensation is very low according to the standard of living.

Job Offer Dilemma

Now, I have received a job offer for a Training and Development profile in a reputed manufacturing company, which is a big brand, and they are offering good pay. I am unsure whether I should accept it or not. In my current job, the profile is very good, and every day is a new learning experience for me, but I am unfamiliar with the other side, except that the company is a well-known brand and the role involves Training & Development.

I would suggest you stick to your current job and gain some valuable experience. You have acknowledged that there are many things to learn every day, which can help you build a strong foundation for future opportunities. You can receive a new and better offer in the future as well.

As you mentioned that you are a fresher, it is understandable to have compensation lower than that of experienced individuals. However, you can certainly be appraised if you perform well. I believe that having good knowledge and confidence, which can only be earned through strong knowledge and experience, will offer you many good opportunities with higher salaries.

Difference Between HR Generalist and T&D Profiles

You mentioned that you are an HR Generalist and have received an offer for a Training & Development (T&D) Profile. Let me shed some light on the difference between these two profiles.

The HR Generalist profile covers all the functions and activities of HR. This role gives you the chance to work with various HR functions, allowing you to learn and absorb as much as you wish (depending on your willingness to learn). However, if you choose the T&D profile, you may find yourself limited to this specific area since T&D is also a part of the HR Generalist profile. It might be better to stay in your current job and continue enhancing your learning skills.

While making any decision, please consider the following:

- Please look out for compensation, profile, learning, and all aspects. Better exposure to almost all fields of HR, since it's a small company, you will be free to make your own decisions.

- In the new offered profile, you will be restricted to one profile. That will not harm anything, as in all big companies they have different departments to take care of different things.

- When looking for a job change, most companies offer a package considering the last CTC. But if you are planning to become an HR Generalist, then I would suggest, please don't focus solely on money.

I have a similar situation where I transitioned from a consulting background to a corporate one. Here, I am solely handling almost 300-400 employees. The profile is good, but my biggest pain point is the salary as they based it on my last CTC.

The decision is yours. Consider whether you are interested in working as an HR Generalist. If yes, then don't opt for this. But if not, then please go ahead and seize the opportunity.

As Mr. Arora suggested, it is better to stay with the HR Generalist role. If you are satisfied with the roles, responsibilities, and work culture in your existing company, then it is better to stay there and learn. I feel pay should not be the priority for freshers. If you gain good exposure, then you can demand better compensation in other organizations after gaining experience.

Moreover, you mentioned it is a start-up company, so there won't be any established policies and procedures. You may have to develop all HR strategies.

Thank you for your responses. I understand both cases very well after the above discussion. I am satisfied with my profile, roles and responsibilities, working culture, and environment, but at the end of the day, it's a consultancy. Consultancies are not considered as good as companies in general perception. Won't it hamper my career growth?

Secondly, as Sonali Neve said, future offerings will be based on the last CTC. I am concerned about this issue as well. I understand that as a fresher, I should not focus on pay, but in the long run, it may become an issue for me in the future.

I am confounded. When I compare myself with my current job, my role is very good, and I am happy. However, when I envision myself two years down the line, I am blank.

When I compare myself with the other offer, I may have to struggle with the profile initially, but there are chances for a better future.

Should I concentrate on my present and continue with my current job, or should I look at my future perspective and accept the other offer?
