Starting an HR Club at Our Campus: What Roles and Responsibilities Should We Consider?

ajitmathai
Dear Sir,

I am currently pursuing my MBA in the 3rd semester with a specialization in HR at Bangalore. We have decided to initiate an HR club on our campus, which will be organized by our colleagues themselves. We kindly request you to provide us with some tips that would benefit our group and extend advantages to other departments as well.

Therefore, I would like to request guidelines on how to effectively start the club and the roles and responsibilities of each member within the club.

Thank you,
Ajit Mathai.

Dear Ajit,

It's good to see the formation of the HR club in your Campus. Here are some tips for effectively running the club:

1. Name the Club.
2. Select a Logo that resembles the name.
3. Organize events in the name of the club, such as:
- Management meets
Invite other MBA colleges to participate in competitions like:
a. Management Quiz
b. Market Makers
- Sports meets
- Cultural programs

4. Involve your juniors in the activities of the club so that they do not face problems when organizing events.
5. Maintain a unique dress code.
6. Celebrate the anniversary of the club at the end of every year.
7. Invite Industrialists/HR Managers to such functions.
8. Establish a governing body of 5 members from the students, including:
a. Coordinator
b. Public Relations Executive
c. Secretary
d. Finance Executive
e. Event Executive/Programme Executive

Finally, the budget is very important. Make sure to talk to the Management/HOD for the right support. Collect money from the students and set up a treasure or consider opening a bank account.

Best wishes,

Hi Ajit,

Jagadeesh has covered all issues in detail. However, I would like to add one thing - many times clubs start with loads of enthusiasm which peters out over a short period, much like the product life of a consumer product. I would suggest that the Club should address the key HR issues and form discussion groups to present papers or write articles based on inputs from the industry. This way, all members can gain insights and learn a thing or two.

Cheers,
Rajat
