Dear Rahul,
When you say canteen facility, you mean the food quality or other facilities like proper seating arrangement and the lilke?
In most of the companies I visit as Consultant, I see them letting this on contract. They fix a good contractor and they take care of everything.
Management's co-operation and contribution play a vital role in such labour welfare facilities. When I was in DCW Limited, we did a lot of improvements over the period (ours is a management subsidized co-operative canteen - workers' strength is 700 plus 250 staff) such as converting the kitchen into centralized steam cooking one, bought fridges, deep freezers etc., to store milk and perishables, providing new fibre glass tables and chairs, dish washers, wall mounted industrial fans besides ceiling fans, Effluent Treatment Plant, kitchen garden, LCD TVs and music system etc.
We appointed two masters to prepare variety food at higher salary. However, the Management should help you for all these. Lest, fix a good experienced contractor (there are plenty in the market who have experience in industrial canteens) and just monitor.
Before taking any improvement action, please consult your Unions (if you have).
I am happy that you focus on this - good food will always keep our workforce faithful to us - Rane and TVS groups of companies concentrate more on this aspect.
all the best to you,
Ganesh Ramachandran
