Understanding MTI and Improving Pronunciation
MTI (Mother Tongue Influence) is a natural issue caused by the inability to place our tongue correctly for consonant sounds.
The basic difference between Indians speaking English and Americans and Brits is that the latter drop their lower jaws while speaking, open their mouths more, and produce crisper and clearer sounds. The Indian tendency to not open the mouth hampers the proper mouth formation necessary for these sounds.
Key Sounds to Focus On
The key sounds to work on are 'T', 'P', 'K', 'S', 'Sh', 'Z', 'Zh'. Overcoming the barrier of MTI requires practicing reading English aloud in front of a mirror. Observing your own mouth formation can significantly aid in improving pronunciation. Additionally, practicing with someone proficient in English can be beneficial.
